Being charged with a crime is scary. It can cost you your job, your freedom, your professional license, your ability to stay in school, and even your ability to rent an apartment. That’s why you need a lawyer who is willing to stand up for you in court and fight for you in court. Aren’t all lawyers saying that? Experience Matters
Trial experience matters. A lawyer’s win/loss record matters. I win a lot of trials. I also get a lot of criminal charges dismissed without ever going to trial. But, to get the best result, you need a lawyer that the prosecutor knows that when they walk into the courtroom with me, they are in for a fight. There are a lot of unexpected things that happen in a trial so I know how to handle those issues and what the law is when they come up so you get a fair trial.
An experienced lawyer knows there is more than one way to resolve a case. Knowing what options there are to get a resolution to your case comes from previous cases. Your case could be dismissed by a motion, a diversion program, or because I explained to the prosecutor and showed them the evidence why the police made a mistake when they arrested you.
Prosecutors know which lawyers are not afraid to go to trial. That’s why I get better deals and outcomes for my clients.
Education Matters
There is a lot that law schools do not teach lawyers in practice. Most of them teaching are not practicing and trying cases. A lawyer MUST go to seminars to keep up with the latest strategies for winning cases. Seminars cost money and take time away from your family, BUT networking and learning from the best attorneys in the country is the only way to keep getting better. I learn something new before every trial. Whether that’s how psychology and persuasion work or knowing the current and latest case law to help win your case.
Lawyers are required to attend 30 hours of Continuing Legal Education every 3 years. I typically attend 5 times that amount. Why? Because I want to win for you. If you’re forced to go to trial, you want the most trained lawyer you can get fighting for you.
Enthusiasm Matters
What good is it if your lawyer is afraid to go to trial? File a Motion that can win your case? Or worse, does not know how to try a case or what the law is to win a Motion to Dismiss. I hear lawyers and prosecutors say all the time “Ahh, the judge will never grant that.” Well, you can’t win unless you try. Plus, you’re educating the prosecutor about the case, showing the judge the problems with the case so that you can get a better plea offer. What if you added something about taking the time and attention to detail to look at the case from an angle that requires outside-the-box thinking?
Trying cases and attending legal conferences all over the United States requires energy and commitment. Just like a professional athlete, I want to win and I’m putting in the hours and work to get better. There is no better feeling than saving an innocent person’s freedom, career, or family, but that has to drive you in order to be successful.
Since starting my legal career over 30 years ago, I have always been a criminal defense trial attorney. Never a prosecutor. Some people will say “Oh, he was a former prosecutor, I’m going to hire them.” Why? That was the person trying to put you in jail last week and did not believe your story.
